kenya: naivasha

i realize that this is the 4th blog on naivasha...but its like uncle jim's keji - we keep on coming back, and each time enjoy it in a different way, so its worth putting a few of the pictures we got this time. its also a very reasonable costing holiday location, 120km or so from Nairobi and has a beautiful campsite. as i have mentioned before, naivasha is a bird sanctuary - more than 400 species of birds, so these are mostly bird pics. we did see the hippo walking around at night, but no good pictures of him.

egret fishing in the wind

a pelican on the still early morning lake...

not really a bird is it?

i am not sure what kind of bird this is, but sandi calls it the 'mafia bird' because of its robber like eye mask.

most of my favorite pics are absolute flukes, such as this one...

there are many kingfishers...

a special treat for us...we could see a fish eagle from a distance (we always see them from a distance - never close up) but this time it wasnt on top of a tree, it was at water level (still from a distance though). One guy who runs boats was just docking his when we were trying to see it and he kindly gave us a free ride the 100meters or so to where it was. We got to see this majestic bird a bit closer up for about a minute before it got scared and flew off, but we really did enjoy the experience....

i had planned to wake up early and climb up to the 'top camp' a little hill above the lake to see the sunrise, but on waking up wanted nothing more than to go right back to sleep. sandi encouraged me and we got treated to a beautiful sunrise over the rift valley...mt longonot in the first pic, and the 2 of us in the second...
