kenya: kisumu city
i did a quick trip to kisumu last week. kisumu is kenya's third largest city, located on the shore of lake victoria. the majority of the inhabitants belong to the third largest (what a coincidence, 3 seems to be important here - wonder if i can find a third third!) tribe in kenya, the luo. the luo are known for their cleanliness, love of fish and fondness for bombastic speech.
for the past year or so we have had a luo translation team in bethel - its the first time we have had a permanent translation team in one of the tribal languages. it seems that many congregations were luo but would pretend to be swahili for the duration of the CO visit, after which they would promptly revert to luo. so now we have a team, and as of 2008 they will be putting out a wt in luo. they are going to move to kisumu since the society's policy is that a translation team should be located in the place where the language is spoken - then they will have their finger on the pulse of the language.
so, to get to the point, we were going to install a small computer network there for the 6 brothers and sisters who are luo translators who will be moving to the first bethel annex in kenya.
it was a short flight - 45 minutes - and since its a small propeller plane we were able to see many features along the trip - mt kilimanjaro and mt kenya were both perfectly clear. i was along with 2 brothers (so we were THREE altogether!). joshua was helping me install the computer network and edgar was painting the annex. it was their first time in a plane and both were quite excited!
i was only there 2 days but managed a quick trip to the lakeside, saw the fishermens boats and on the way to the airport saw the beautiful sunset below...
